Austrian Christmas Cookies: Haselnuss Makronen

Ingredients

150 g of icing sugar
150 g of grated hazelnuts
3 egg whites

What Haselnussmakronen are

Haselnussmakronen are an incredibly simple, yet very nice cookie with a fine flavour from the hazelnuts that get roasted through the baking and thereby gain a very intense aroma. The cookies start crunchy, but become chewy after a while. Decorate them with a whole hazelnut in the centre. Despite or because of their simplicity, one of my favourites.

How to prepare Haselnussmakronen

Very simple: Whip the egg whites until very stiff and add the sugar. Then carefully mix in the grated nuts. Use a spoon to form little cookies on a baking sheet that is greased or covered with baking paper. Decorate the individual cookies with a whole hazelnut. Bake them at 175 degrees Celsius for 10 to 20 minutes.
