Grapes on a vinyard just outside of Vienna

I took the picture of these grapes in a vineyard just north of Vienna in summer of 2008. They were growing in the Hohe Warte area, only one of the many wine-areas that surround Vienna. Many of the vineyards make attractive destinations for walks.

I like going there on weekends when I feel like I have to escape from the city without having the time for proper trips to the surroundings. Convenient "entry points" for vineyard tours are Grinzing, the Cobenzl or Kahlenberg just north of Vienna - all accessible easily by public transportation from Heiligenstadt. The former villages and now Viennese neighbourhoods of Dornbach and Neustift am Walde are nice, too.

If you are willing to make a little trip, I can recommend a ride to Baden. From there, you can walk through the vineyards to the "Heurigen Capital" of Gumpoldskirchen, a picturesque walk highly popular with the people of Vienna especially in September and October. The town of Klosterneuburg lies in the middle of vineyards and is a great place for walking, too. By the way, a Heuriger is a traditional wine inn that makes the perfect compliment to a walk in the vineyards - for details, please read the respective article on "Heurige".
