Vienna in June ("Juni")

Vienna is a diverse and colourful place full of life; there are different things to see, places to go and stuff to do in different times of the year. In this set of articles, I will highlight the best seasonal events of each month. In June, proper summer has started. Vienna is slowly getting full and on certain weekends, the peaking convention season might fill all hotels long in advance. Still not as hot as July or August, June is also popular with elderly travellers who want to avoid the main season.

Weather in Vienna in June

With June, proper summer starts in Vienna: Temperatures rise in a manner that correlates with the number of tourists that populate the city. The average daily maximum temperature reaches an impressive 22 degrees Celsius and the minimum does not go below 14 degrees. There can even be periods that are hot and humid. With an average of eight hours of sunshine per day, June hits the record mark in this respect.

On the other hand, the nine days with rain are also the highest you can expect for Vienna throughout the year. Bring light clothing with a pullover or a rain jacket for days with bad weather as well as evenings and early mornings. Otherwise, sun-blockers and summer hats are more appropriate.

Things to See & Do in Vienna: June

The Wiener Festwochen music festival ends in mid-June, but there are plenty of other events going on in Vienna this month. June is warm and fair and the weather is relatively predictable, so concerts and outdoor events are very popular. The "Jazz Fest Wien" opens its gates - or rather, stages. It takes place in front of the Rathausplatz, the square in front of the City Hall.

Other concerts and music festivals - such as the Nova Rock festival - take place in the rural surroundings of Vienna. The festival season reaches its climax with the Donauinselfest. According to Vienna′s city government (the organiser), the Donauinselfest is the biggest open-air concert in Europe - attracting more than three million visitors per year. Annually since 1984, several open-air stages draw the crowds to the artificial Donauinsel island. The whole event is free of charge.

The Vienna City Marathon takes place in June, too - the name essentially says it all: Thousands of people who run over 40 kilometres in Vienna.

Things to Do & See in Vienna′s Surroundings: June

Note the general recommendations for day-trips from Vienna that I have covered in a separate article. The entire area is usually very nice in June; consider tours into the Marchfeld, to the Wachau or the the Seewinkel area in the Burgenland. In various locations in Lower Austria, the Theaterfest Niederösterreich attracts visitors with theatre performances in monasteries, castles and palaces. The Donaufestival is dedicated to music and drama and held in various historic towns along the Danube. In the Roman ruins of Carnuntum, a series of classical drama is performed.
