The Stift Melk Abbey in the Wachau region is among Austria's most extensive baroque monastries. Its size, splendour and cultural and historical significance is just overwhelming. It hosts an important collection of medieval manuscripts and was an important contributor to the Habsburg's efforts to establish Catholic faith as the predominant religion in their empire.
