Salzburg′s Prince Archbishops

In a way, Salzburg is Austria′s youngest province - surely the Burgenland joined the republic much later, but all the counties that constitute Austria today have been under Habsburg rule for a very long time before.

The Kollegienkirche or Collegiate Church in the ancient city centre of Salzburg is a Baroque masterpiece.

Salzburg is an exception: It was an independent principality ruled by rich and powerful Prince Archbishops - of whom some had privileges beating those of a cardinal. To supplement the list of Austrian monarchs and the presidents and chancellors, the following list of the Bishops of Salzburg will provide you with a "red line" through the history of Austria′s finest county.

Being very Salzburgian myself, I would certainly prefer to re-install a Prince again and end nearly 200 years of occupation by evil Austrians...
